SATAN

SATAN - Into The Future & Suspended Sentence (1995) UK

SPV STEAMHAMMER RECORDS
Re-released e remasterized in 1995 by the German-based Steamhammer Records.
This CD consists of their 1986 EP "Into The Future", along with their second (and swan-song) album, 1987's "Suspended Sentence". Feature new singer Michael J. Jackson.
The blazing guitars are still present, but their "personal" sound (ref. "Court in the Act") has disappeared to make room for a more "ordinary" approach. Though still full of energy and enthusiasm, the band seems to be less creative and original. Strangely enough, this CD has put the content of the EP after the album, when in fact the EP preceeded the album, making the transition a bit more drastic than needed.
TRACKS:
1. 92nd Symphony
2. Who Dies Wins
3. 11th Commandment
4. Suicidal Justice
5. Vandal
6. S C U M
7. Avalanche of a Million He
8. Calculated Execution
9. Key to Oblivion
10. Hear Evil, See Evil, Spea

SATAN - Into The Fire (1982) UK

CASSETTE PRIVATE PRESS
This demo cassette "Into The Fire" is their second release, after "The First Demo" in 1981.
Formed from the ashes of the band Blitzkrieg in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, in 1981, the original line-up of Satan comprised Trevor Robinson (vocals), Russ Tippins (guitar), Steve Ramsey (b. 8 July 1964, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; guitar), Graeme English (b. 4 November 1963, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; bass) and Andy Reed (drums). In 1981 the band recorded two tracks for a compilation, Roxcalibur, and a self-financed single entitled "Kiss Of Death"/"Heads Will Roll". Soon after its release vocalist Robinson and Reed left the band to be replaced by Ian Swift and Ian McCormick respectively. This band recorded with Ian Swift (voice) the seven-track demo Into The Fire, but by mid-1983 the classic line-up of Satan had been completed with the recruitment of Brian Ross (vocals) and Sean Taylor (drums).
TRACKS:
1. Into the Fire
2. Trial by Fire
3. Blades of Steel
4. No Turning Back
5. Break Free
6. Pull the Trigger
7. The Ritual

SATAN - Kiss Of Death 7" (1982) UK

GUARDIAN RECORDS
The keen aer of Terry Gavaghan (Guardian's boss) however, had spotted some stars in the making, and he rapidly came up with bigger plans for SATAN, suggesting that the outfit might like to see some of their demo efforts appearing on vinyl. The ambitious band eventually capitulated to these requests and stumped up the necessary cash, with " Kiss Of Death" and "Heads Will Roll" being selected to comprise the first SATAN 7", issued on the Guardian Records in the early months of 1982.
The success of the single came as a shok to both label and band, and stocks of "Kiss Of Death" were swiftly exhausted, but the record was never re-pressed, for some strange reason, rendering it an extremely coveted and highly-valued piece nowadays. Still, the label subsequently decided to include both of SATAN's remaining demo selections, "The Executioner" and "Oppression" on their "Roxcalibur" compilation, allowing fans another chance to get their hands on some exclusive meterial.

SATAN - Suspended Sentence (1987) UK

STEAMHAMMER RECORDS
The Steamhammer CD release (SHCD 7003 / SPV 85-1819) includes the "Into the
Future" EP.
Satan’s second full-length, "Suspended Sentence", feature new singer Michael J. Jackson, and the music included here has less polish and, in my opinion, is fairly inferior to their first album, "Court In The Act".
The blazing guitars are still present, but their "personal" sound has disappeared to make room for a more "ordinary" approach. Though still full of energy and enthusiasm, the band seems to be less creative and original.

SATAN - Court in the Act (1983) UK

ROADRUNNER RECORDS
Re-released in 1997 on CD by Neat Metal Records and in 2008 byMetal Mind Records on CD "numbered digipack limited edition" 1000 units.
Hail to that great year 1983 that gave us "Kill ‘em all", "Show no mercy", "Melissa", "Sirens", "Crystal Logic" and countless marvellous albums but most notably "Court in the act" by the great Satan.
This album is my favourite NWoBHM/Speed full length. Too underrated, probably due to numerous name changes ( Pariah and Blind Fury ) that killed any chance this band had of making a lasting name for themselves. But they did leave their mark, influencing 80's and early 90's power metal (notably Blind Guardian who covered "Trial by Fire") with their simple but creative and all balls out heavy guitar work and melodic vocals.
"Court in the Act" was one of the most aggressive and technical releases in the realm of NWOBHM. It's more than arguable that this album could be seen as a blueprint for both speed and power metal bands that would follow in the next coming years from here. The emphasis on up front vocals and crazy guitar work is definitely there, which have both always been strong elements to speed the power genres.
Vocalist Brian Ross whom is no stranger to the scene truly makes this album stand above and beyond many others. The best part about his vocals is that there's really not a lot of people out there that have a voice quite like him. Most of this album is speed metal, with quite beautiful dual lead guitar melodies.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
TRACKS:
1. Into the Fire
2. Trial by Fire
3. Blades of Steel
4. No Turning Back
5. Broken Treatries
6. Break Free
7. Hunt You Down
8. The Ritual
9. Dark Side of Innocence
10. Alone in the Dock
11. Dynamo
12. Pull the Trigger

BLIND FURY - Out Of Reach (1985) UK

ROADRUNNER RECORDS
Satan would later change it’s name to Blind fury because they didn’t want to be associated with the growing number of satanic bands coming mostly from the newly emerging thrash metal movement, they released an excellent album titled "Out Of Reach featuring the same flawless musicianship and strong numbers, but without the great Brian Ross and with a cleaner production than on "Court in the act" the magic seemed to have disappeared though "Out Of Reach" is still recommended.
Blind Fury is essentially the band Satan became, as the line-up is identical with the exception of new vocalist Lou Taylor. You’d expect a simple name-change to be of no importance, but it’s pretty clear that the band had a new, although not all too different, style to boot. Songwriting is mostly of a traditional-rock and roll uplifting, playful nature with lots of various tributes to that lifestyle, and the appropriate simplicity to accompany it too. However, one needs only change focus to see the true nature of this album. Underneath, (mostly) dark, technical, borderline surreal – and very original – guitar playing reigns supreme, and is the one reason "Out of Reach" is of so much interest. Pretty much every note bears a meaning of importance. Once you hit play, it gets increasingly difficult to stop listening, as every second gets more and more interesting. It leaves you with the feeling of wanting more and more and more, until you realize you’ve spun the damn thing twenty times over already. The reason: Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins. I am completely sincere when I say that "Out of Reach" has some of the most impressive guitar playing I’ve ever heard. It may not be as technical and fast as their "Court in the Act", but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in originality. A lot can be said about their projects, good and bad, but they were in my opinion the best guitar duo to come out of the NWOBHM.
TRACKS:
1. Do It Loud
2. Out of Reach
3. Evil Eyes
4. Contact Rock and Roll
5. Living on the Edge
6. Dynamo (There Is A Place)
7. Back Inside
8. Dance of the Crimson Lady, Part 1
