My first impression upon hearing Three Words is that this was some serious Manowar worship. All four songs are a little "metal anthemic" on the side, the kind of songs that get the crowd excited during a live show - not so much headbanging as sing-along, fist in the air, foot-tapping, well, you get the picture. This is essentially catchy, more or less commercial Heavy Metal - think Manowar meets Iron Maiden, with a hint of Power Metal à la Gamma Ray - an influence felt more on at least one of their full length albums. The vocals are particularly closer to Power Metal. I found that these took some getting used to, since the singer is not exactly the best of the genre. The accent sometimes remind me of Italian singers, and he does on occasion try to sing past his range, and that hurts a little. But overall he's decent and gets the job done, and the vocal melodies are often so sing-along inducing that one can make abstraction of the shortcomings once the "frenzy" catches on. This has all the ingredients of mid-80s Heavy Metal - catchy vocal lines, heavy, sharp guitar riffs and of course the abundance of solos that drove the anti-metal crowd nuts. Three Words won't make metal history, but it is a decent little EP filled with catchy, old school Heavy Metal meets modern Power metal anthems that have no other pretense than to bring some life to the party.

In 1994 another legendary Greek metal outfit from Thessaloniki,Sarissa, came into light(leaving temporary the underground dungeons)with their same-titled CD-release.Another masterpiece of Greek metal was achieved and that was,to say the least,a good ending for a band that had a cult following from their demo days.

One of the highlights of the '90s Greek metal was Dark Nova. Its debut album 'The dark Rhapsodies', is a fine sample of epic/dark/technical power-speed metal with imaginative guitars, majestic vocal lines and great compositions. It's still beyond my comprehension how a band of such quality, didn't make it to the top.Songs like 'Twilight star','Avenger',the instrumental 'Haunted Forest' but also most of the rest, placed the band in the power metal elite of the '90s!It's too bad that almost noone outside Greece had the chance to make the acquaintance to the music of the band. After some live shows and a promo tape, the band dissapeared without a trace.

In the early '90s,Cyprus invaded in the metal World.Although it can'tbe proud of posessing a huge Metal scene,Cyprus' contribution to the universal metal isn't totally significant.Armageddon which was the support band in Spitfire's live in Cyprus in 1987,managed to release a very interesting 4-tracker EP in 1991 under the Cypriot label All Records.Apart from the obvious resemblance of the singer to Klaus Meine, the music of the band is purely '80s classic heavy metal and it's a pity songs like 'Raiders of Steel' didn't have the chance to reach a broader public.

Every Brainstorm release since I first heard "Ambiguity" has dominated my CD player for weeks up it's release. "Liquid Monster" is no exception to this rule. While Brainstorm are indeed a power metal band, these guys have created a unique sound for themselves that there is no denying their identity. Unfortunately for them, this puts them in danger of repeating themselves from album to album. I have already read accusations to this effect across the web. However, I find their sound and songwriting to have improved with each consecutive release. "Liquid Monster" simply destroys all competitors. The album opens with the infectiously heavy "Worlds Are Comin' Trough", with it's intricate mix of keyboards and crunchy guitars. "Inside the Monster" features on of the band's best hooks in a long time. The very title of the song puts the melody of the chorus ringing through my head. The albums first single is perhaps one of Brainstorm's finest songs ever. "All Those Words" is an outstanding, melodic song featuring a mix of Andy B. Franck's unique vocals layered with some beautiful female vocals. If this song doesn't push the band into more popular territories across the globe, I would be very surprised. "Lifeline" returns the band to a sound that borders on thrash metal and reminds me slightly of Iced Earth's heavier moments. "Invisible Enemy" brings the tempo down, but is nonetheless heavy and aggressive. This song features sweeping guitar riffs and yet another big, memorable chorus brought to life by layers of vocals. "Heavenly" takes the tempo down even further and is a tender, emotional ballad. Once again, it's Andy Frank's commanding vocal performance that brings this song to life together with a big, meaty chorus. It also helps that the band has one of the best mixes I have ever heard. Many power metal bands lost the heaviness when they are overproduced, but that is certainly not the case with "Liquid Monster". The production here is outstanding. Brainstorm have nearly a perfect mix. While every instrument is clearly heard, they also haven't lost their edge. In the mellower moments, like the ballad "Heavenly", the production keeps the song from sounding like some cheesy AOR ballad. "Painside" and "Despair to Drown" are chunky, Judas Priest-inspired chunks of German power metal. "Mask of Life" is another more melodic number that starts off sounding a bit melancholy before picking up into a heavy, with some heavy, sweeping guitar riffs and layers of vocals. "Even Higher" thrashes along at full speed before the album finishes off with the equally heavy, melodic "Burns My Soul". Brainstorm have improved with each new album and must be considered as part of the upper echelon of power metal bands. "Liquid Monster" should at least push Brainstorm into similar realms of popularity of bands like Iced Earth. As with Iced Earth, I really think that Brainstorm have come into their own. They have truly developed their own unique sound.

Brainstorm are quickly becoming among my favorite bands. Brainstorm are on a metal quest to conquer the world and if they continue to put out music of this caliber they just might do it. Their mixture of heavy power metal and melody, along with Andy Franck's soulful vocals are just captivating to me. So, I guess it is only a matter of how much backing they get from Metal Blade. Musically I can only describe "Soul Temptation" as a mixture of the intensity, emotion and heavy rhythms of Iced Earth mixed with the best parts of Dream Theater's "Images and Words." That is what came to mind the fifth or sixth time I played this disc. It's just absolutely one of my favorite discs to come out this year.

On Brainstorm's second disc for Metal Blade (their fourth overall), they continue in the modern day power metal mode. I can't imagine any fan of Nevermore or Iced Earth not digging this disc. I really see this disc as falling somewhere between those two bands, holding tight to the true metal banner like Iced Earth, but with a dark, more modern production and those soulful vocals like Nevermore. I am not suggesting, that Brainstorm is a clone of either band, but this was the picture that I got while driving through town cranking this disc. Being the Brainstorm are from Germany there are some similarities to German bands like Enola Gay and well. The riffs are heavy and crunchy, the drum work is outstanding and the vocals are mid-ranged, yet passionate at times and aggressive at others. The vocal melodies didn't hit me over the head the very first time I heard this disc, but they were interesting enough to have me longing for more, so they have become more familiar with each listen.

To my surprise and delight Brainstorm play crushing heavy metal not unlike Iced Earth. I think one of the biggest similarities that I heard was in the mid to high vocal range of Andy Franck who reminded me slightly of Matthew Barlow. Despite this, however, the songwriting, and especially the style of rhythm guitar playing is unique to this band. Album opener "Crush Depth" is a pummeling power metal song, as is the majority of the music on this disc. The song starts off with an eerie clean guitar part before coming in full tilt at about a minute into the song. "Tear Down the Walls" takes the intensity up a bit, as well as the speed. 'Beyond My Destiny' is a superb power metal ballad with orchestration, killer vocal-arrangements and a big hook. 'Ambiguity' is the band's third CD.

I was quite surprised to find this disc being that it was released on a small label in Germany. Anyhow, Brainstorm's sophomore release is surprisingly as heavy and as well written as "Ambiquity" and "Metis Mortis." I'm not sure why I was expecting something less, but this disc has a ton of hook, crunch and aggression. I can't get enough of this stuff.

For those who watched the 2008 Eurovision contest TERASBETONI is not an unknown name. After Finland’s win with Lordi in 2006, they decided to send another heavy metal band making us wonder what’s wrong with the contest and how mainstream has heavy metal become…
For now let’s leave this conversations aside as TERASBETONI is a band that exists since 2002 with two albums before “Myrskyntuoja” (“Metallitotuus” 2005, “Vaadimme Metallia” 2006) that received wide recognition especially in their homeland. They rose from the underground and their only concert outside Finland is in Wacken 2005 - not bad! From Wacken to Eurovision is a long way though and the combination is a bit weird to say the least...
TERASBETONI play something between classic heavy metal and power/epic with lots of melodies, solos and keyboards. The vocals are harsh, piercing and can make high notes easily following the riffs in choruses. The songs are structured in the typical metal way giving plenty of Iron Maiden, Dio and Manowar references. There are many sing-along choruses, double-bass drumming and cavalry pace in the guitars. All lyrics are in Finnish making the outcome exotic to our Mediterranean ears and if we can trust the internet they have to do with the metal way of life and warrior themes. TERASBETONI reproduce all the cliché of the classic metal fashion and as they say they are not deadly serious about it so we shouldn’t be deadly serious about them in return.
Nevertheless, “Myrskyntuoja” is an acceptable album for the typical classic metal fan, although you can easily tell the band is lightweight.
Metal for fun or fan for metal, I don’t know and I can’t tell. The music is good and if it wasn’t for the Eurovision thing they could be the typical average heavy metal group from Finland (yes, that’s a trademark subgenre of heavy metal). Now they are just the Eurovision metallers for 2008. Each chooses his own side.

Quite a unique gem released by Shadow Kingdom Records (rapidly becoming one of the best underground metal labels), Energy Vampires were the band that vocalist Jonathan Stewart rose out of the ashes of Slauter Xstroyes (If you haven't heard them you need to get on it pronto, extremely high quality U.S. metal) with. This was originally recorded in 1991 and only committed to tape. Given that over 20 different musicians contributed to this, it's an amazingly cohesive unit that one could well believe was the work of a single line up band.

After a suitably eerie keyboard intro, " Packin' A Pistol" comes roaring out of the gate with face ripping intent, anthemic metal of solid caliber like Mercyful Fate forcibly raping everything that the LA sleaze metal scene of the late 80's aspired to and missed. A six gun in one hand and an inverted cross in the other, this one was the perfect choice for an opening tune, serious energy, serious bluster and bravado, blistering guitar... good stuff... very good stuff and it doesn't sound like anything you've heard before. Then comes " "Blood Money" which slows the tempo (but only at first) but maintains the unique factor highly. This one is an angular, unorthodox creature that manages to be both catchy and somewhat difficult to hold onto at the same time. This opening pairing is a good indication of what's to come: highly varied, absolutely metal but in full acknowledgment of it's rock n' roll heritage, darkness with a sleazy edge.

Other tracks that demand individual attention include "Battle Axe" the SX chestnut given a well deserved resurrection, about as archetypal an 80's U.S. metal tune as one could wish for... pounding, smashing, immediately memorable nicely followed by the out and out metal charger of "Different Form The Rest", "Footsteps in the Snow" which is like a twisted heavy metal'd out Mott The Hoople melds with Motley Crue on bad acid to write a funeral march, "Mother Fucker" another SX tune risen Phoenix like from the ashes to once more slash, burn and kill with metal,... and the ballads. Of those "Broken Winged Angel" is more of an ominous spoken word piece, while "My Eyes" (included in both Piano and Acoustic Guitar versions) hits the mark well, avoiding the often cringe worthy pitfalls that many metal bands hit when attempting balladry and solidly nailing the heart tugging but dark melodies that make one work. Through it all the vocals are a standout factor, like Mercyful Fate, Halloween, Judas Priest and S/T EP era Queensryche from beyond the grave. The musicianship is consistently above average, tight and well supported by the clear and powerful production.

If you've had a hankering for something different in metal then this should be on your list to check out. The cover art is killer, the music is worthy, memorable and only get's better with repeated spins. Kudos to Shadow Kingdom for releasing this; between this and Stygian Shore I'm really looking forward to their next excavation from the metal grave...
