Enchanter out of Jackson, Michigan issued two demos, Defenders of the Realm in 1988 and Time Gone Past Nevermore in 1989. They also recorded a one song demo (with an intro) never released in 1990. This very limited edition (1000) press by Arkeyn Steel records gathers all those tracks with lyrics and a band history.

Enchanter were at the progressive end on the 80's metal continuum, think somewhere between early Fates Warning and Queensryche circa the ep and first LP. The vocals are high pitched and clear, but well balanced by a meaner, nastier, burlier guitar tone than normal for this type of music. It’s all very solid stuff and it’s a pretty sure bet they would have been signed had they ignited a few years earlier. For a demo only band this is good quality stuff. Metal to the bone with good musicianship and better than decent song writing.

Defenders of the Realm starts it off and to my ears these four tracks are the best on offer, though that differs from the band and labels opinion (they both feel they got better as they went along). Maybe it’s just that I have that demo and was already familiar with and fond of it, but the songs just seem to be a tad heavier and rocking and more immediate. “Thor”, “Beckoned with a Call”, “Defenders of the Realm” and “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” can stand up easily to a whole lot of the signed bands in this style from back then.

Time Gone Past Nevermore takes a small step in a more progressive direction. It’s still solidly metal and the guitar continues to exceed the usual heaviness factor for progressive metal bands. It reprises “ Beckoned with a Call”, but to my ears not a drastically different version from the first demo’s. Following the four tunes from TGPN is the unreleased Intro/Ethereal Quarter demo. Kicking in the progressive tendencies now heavily, the musicianship and arrangements are definitely impressive, it’s high time this got heard.

I’m not sure how long this will be around (it’s already been stated there will be no repress) so if you are a fan of this kind of 80's metal, get on it quickly. Nice to see the band finally get a well packaged release they deserved it decades ago.

"Unveiled" is the re-release of the CAGE-debut, which before had only been available through the band itself. The five Americans around exceptional vocalist Sean Pack already shone out on the RockHard's "Unerhört"-series of unsigned bands, which now deservedly lead to a contract with Munich-based label Omega Records.

Stylistically the San Diego-troup covers nearly all areas of Power Metal, be it fast and melodious ("Shoot To Kill"), in strong mid-tempo ("Devil Inside") or the nearly groovy (also for purists in the most positive sense possible; "Buried In A Box"), everything can be found in great quality for a newcomer-group. What attracts your attention furthermore is the track "Release Me", which could have stood on an album of Power Doom-gods SOLITUDE AETURNUS without any problems!

Who likes US-(Power) Metal like old SAVATAGE or WARRIOR, has to get this CD!

Out of the gates this album starts like a raging pit bull. Sean Peck's vocals are over the top and the dual guitar attack will grab your attention in a hurry. 'The final solution' is solid in every way. Consistency is one of this albums best attributes. Heavy, heavy, and more heavy. Influences and sound reminiscent of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden with the bands own personality evident as well. Other favorite tracks include 'Echelon', 'Root of all evil', 'The trigger effect' which shows Peck's range off a bit, the atmospheric 'Souls and Flesh', my personal favorite 'Broken Dreams' with it's great metallic sound, and 'Vandalize' which covers a lot of ground. This is one of those albums that the die hard true Metal fan has been longing for. This band has been called 'America's best kept secret' and it's no wonder why. The band is really making some noise and is ready to shake your foundations!

Overall
I can attest to the fact that this band is very solid live as well as studio. There is a lot of energy pouring over with these guys that has been missing for some time. The album is hard driving, not just in tempo but in substance. Definitely check it out!

Sencirow is a German based band that had released two demos, Dreamspace (1999) and Crown Of Creation (2001) before finally releasing their first full-length debut album The Perception Of Fear in 2006. Lead by lead vocalist/guitarist David "Kensington" Seifert, Sencirow offers up a killer mix of German style heavy metal that incorporates elements of thrash metal and U.S. styled power metal that's big on meaty, chunky riffs and a general "old school" feel.

After the short, chugging and de-tuned riff-filled opener The Phenomenon Of Frugality, the album quickly kicks into high gear with Demon Inside. With a power/thrash metal and definitively older Iced Earth feel, Kensington's gruff vocal style adds an element of aggression to a track that relives the Ride The Lightning era of Metallica. The Iced Earth similarities crop up every now and again, not only with the dramatic and heavy riffing, but Kensington's voice takes on Matt Barlow like qualities on many occasions throughout the album. Curse Of Lying, complete with its galloping main riff and speedy double bass work along with the more epic The Beggar's Estate are yet more examples of the Iced Earth influence with The Beggar's Estate using the classic harmony thirds that Jon Schaffer uses quite often in his riffs. Harmony third based riffs are also prominent with Palace Of Bones; a more mid tempo and melodic track that has a great "old school" feel. World Collapse sees a bit of a Maiden influence with guitar harmonies over chunky main riffs with Kensington's voice taking on more raspy Blackie Lawless qualities. Feeding The Rage amps up the speed a few notches with a great thrash metal feel with Bullet To The Head continuing the trend. More dramatic arrangements are found with Deliver Me From Pain and the title track The Nightmare Within. Deliver Me From Pain mixes clean guitar based with big heavy sections with Kensington's voice taking on the "desperate" tone of Blind Guardian's Hansi Kursch. Suddenly speeding up for the lead guitar work and vocal refrains, Kensington's vocals fall a bit short in what would otherwise be a metal masterpiece. The title track uses more abstract and intricate arrangements with richer Rush-like chording and a more melodic and progressive feel.

If you like big monster guitar riffs and a killer aggressive heavy metal sound, Sencirow definitely fits the bill. Amazing and catchy riffs are all combined with a flair for the dramatic to create a heavy metal sound that fans of older Iced Earth, Falconer and fellow German based bands Symphorce, Brainstorm, Paragon and Mystic Prophecy will surely enjoy. The sometimes raspy and gruff vocals of David "Kensington" Seifert may be perceived as a weak point on some tracks but their very nature adds a more of a rough-around-the-edges sound to this band that is a welcomed change and besides....great heavy metal is supposed to be a little rough-around-the-edges anyway isn't it?

After the strong IRON CROSS and the good TYRUS-re-release Iron Glory raise their hands for the next sweeping blow. I talk about KRAZE, which is not a sickness, but the name of a US-band.
This one made its rounds through fanzines many years back, but you never heard more about KRAZE as they would not get a chance to record an album. The 13 tracks of this CD all are from their 87-89-demo-phase. And the album is very enjoyable at least for fans of straight Power Metal without frills. Songs like these had been available in hundreds in the glorious Eighties, but only today we are able to evaluate how good the material is compared to today's stuff.
The songs are mostly up-tempo and convince with their roar-along choruses. Highlights are the opener and title-track with its speed-attacks and the superb "Solar Strike", a speed-cracker par excellence.
Musically somewhere between ABATTOIR and VICIOUS RUMORS the album can enthuse me. Just the sound is very mediocre.

COMMUNIC was formed in 2003 as a side project by Oddleif Stensland and Tor Atle Andersen who were bandmates in SCARIOT. They started making fuss around their name with their debut that was produced by Jacob Hansen and their second release " Waves Of Visual Decay".

The album kicks in with a surprise; "On Ancient Ground" is based on a SLAYER-esque guitar riff delivering a solid rhythm section that definitely brings to mind the late works of BRAINSTORM. I think the term Progressive was added to point out the band’s "rich" sound that needs time to grow in you. On thing that blew me from the very beginning was Stensland’s impressive vocals; this gentleman has a powerful mid pitch voice and shares the same singing attitude with Matt Barlow, Andy B. Franck or even Coburn Pharr. Just listen to the vocal catchy melodic lines in "The Abandoned One" and you will get my saying. The flawless production delivers an excellent and atmospheric clean guitar intro in "Becoming Of Man" that slowly builds the tension. Here the keyboards spice things up while the guitar solo comes to the spotlight to reveal the band’s musicianship. One interesting and along the way exciting fact is I did not notice that every song lasted 8 minutes in average. This means that in this album is more that interesting and offers and wide music territory to explore. Among the highlights I should mention the guitar driven "Raven’s Cry" with the excellent bass guitar sound, the melodic vocal harmonies and the tempo changes that brought to my mind the early ICED EARTH. The album closes with the heavy Thrashy in moments "Stone Carved Eyes" that lasts 9 minutes and will make you press the replay button many times!

The bottom line is that I was impressed by this band that made wonder for one more time why all the Northern European countries keep producing such great bands.

Big Swede - Drums

A ’supergroup’ of essentially power metal musicians would ordinarily be expected to produce a power metal, or at a push a progressive metal album, you would think. But X-World/5, put together by former Hammerfall bassist Magnus Rósen, haven’t gone down the obvious route.

Indeed many of the tracks, particularly Cyberchrist, Charge of War and Stand Up, have an industrial style groove to them, with very heavy guitars and far more sinister vocals than fans of singer Nils K. Rue (Pagans Mind) will be used to. The band are completed by guitar heroes Reeves Gabrels (Razor Ball) and Andy LaRocque (ex-King Diamond) and drummer/programmer Stefan “Big Swede” Svensson.

On most of the songs some of Rue’s vocals are twisted by effects and samples, only for him to wail in his distinctive tone straight afterwards. The contrast adds an ominous feeling to an already dark sound that, for the most part, is massively heavy. For most of Charge of War’s verses, for example, Rue is completely unrecognisable as his voice is distorted into that of a sci-fi movie robotic villain over Ministry-ish guitars, which give way to shred solos later on.

Power metal fans expecting something along the lines of Pagan’s Mind meets Hammerfall, tread carefully. This is a very different sound for everyone involved, and it is incredibly good, but perhaps not what fans would expect. The concept came primarily from Rósen and Svensson, which would account for the predominance of bass-heaviness and programming/effects respectively. This is the soundtrack to a horror movie in space; dark, pulsing and loud. You’ve been warned.

Los Angeles Metal outfit PONTIUS PROPHET was the band formulated following the demise of AGENT STEEL. Following a successful run of albums, closing with 'Unstoppable Force' in March 1987, the band fragmented. Singer John Cyriis (a.ka. John Campos) forged PONTIUS PROPHET alongside AGENT STEEL colleagues guitarists Juan Garcia and Michael Hill with Chuck Profus on drums. A solitary demo was recorded under the PONTIUS PROPHET brand, the two track 'Rites Of Hatred' during 1988.
Prior to their term with AGENT STEEL, both Cyriis and Garcia had worked with ABATTOIR. The vocalist's earlier outfits included SCEPTRE. When PONTIUS PROPHET folded, Garcia journeyed through EVIL DEAD and TERROR before resurrecting AGENT STEEL for the comeback album 'The Omega Conspiracy'.
