Sacred Steel's sound derives from mid-eighties speed metal. Remember a time before Fates Warning was considered progressive metal and before Helloween was considered melodic metal? Well, cross Helloween's "Walls Of Jericho", Fates Warning's "Night on Brocken" with early Virgin Steele and Agent Steel and you get the picture. Lyrically, Manowar have got to be Sacred Steel's biggest influence. I mean, these guys must read Manowar lyrics like they were the Bible. Just check out the song titles: "Metal Reigns Supreme," "Sacred Steel," "Sword Of The King," "True Force Of Iron Glory", etc. I suppose that critical reviews would say that these guys are reliving the past when they should be striving for something fresh in the future, but I'm not complaining. As a matter of fact, I say more power to 'em. Raise the flag of metal for heavy metal still reigns supreme! Oh damn, now I sound like a disciple from the church of Manowar.

If LETHAL's debut album "Programmed" is one of your all-time-favourites you should try urgently to get this CD (but it won't be easy and will be rather expensive as well). Vocalist Scott King really sounds like Tom Mallicoat's twin and the songs tend to a QUEENSRYCHE-like slightly progressive direction. You can even compare them to the Swedish band HOLLOW even though THROES OF SANITY play in a higher league. Nevertheless, not one single song sounds similar to the bands mentioned before. The production sounds a bit thin at first but if you turn up the volume it will get better. Seems to be recorded a bit too soft. And don't get fooled by the playing-time for in fact it lasts ten minutes less. This gem was ignored back then totally unjustified thus it is now highly recommended to your Metal Hearts.

WOW! Enola Gay take their German power metal sound one step further adding in a slightly more modern tone, not unlike Nevermore. OK, I don't mean to say that Enola Gay have gone grunge nor do I mean to suggest that they sound like Nevermore clones, but take the emotional vocals, crunchy riffs and impassioned songwriting of Nevermore and mix it with the German metal of bands like Grave Digger and Rage and you'll get an idea of what "Strange Encounter" sounds like. Lyrically the band searches political ideas. Album opener "Enola Gay" questions the decision to drop the first atomic bomb and whether "they have learned from the past." This theme behind this song reminds me of a another German metal band called Accuser that have also written songs critical of America. Other songs explore the evils of television and the psyche of a rapist.

"F.O.T.H." is Enola Gay's debut release and is pure German power metal. On this release they were not overly melodic or saturated with keyboards. They were also not what I would describe as progressive metal. Rather, "F.O.T.H." is real heavy metal similar to bands like Vicious Rumors, Metal Church or early Rage. "F.O.T.H." sports memorable guitar riffs, well executed guitar solos, thick guitar and bass tones, pounding drums, and aggressive, yet melodic vocals. Vocalist Peter Diersmann is actually one of the things I enjoy so much about this band. His vocals are mostly clean and mid-rage, but are passionate and aggressive. For the most part the songs are all heavy although there are some mellower moments. "Never Be Without A Friend" is a melodic, acoustic ballad that is quite emotional and features some nice Thin Lizzy style dual guitar leads. The very next song brings back the aggression with one of the album's heaviest tracks. "Doomwatch" is a fast, double bass driven, speed metal number that has a similar vibe to Accept's "Fast as a Shark". There are a few other songs that have the double bass backbone, such as album closer "Kingdom of the Light", but overall the heavier songs are more mid-paced, traditional heavy metal.

Aftermath - Don't Cheer Me Up

Year: 1988
Genre: Power / Thrash Metal
Country: USA
Format: mp3@CBR224kbps
Size: 67MB
Tracklist:
1.Lines Of Horror 05:59
2.Black And Yellow 03:25
3.Demonspeake 10:30
4.Straight From Hell 03:49
5.Beast Of Wrath 06:04
6.Luci's Dance 05:16
7.Aftermath 03:31
Total playing time: 38:34

"Don't Cheer Me Up" is a kind of a hit-and-miss affair; it has some great moments, but also some not very convincing ones. "Beast of Wrath" is an ambitious, progressively-tinged song, but busy with the more complex arrangements, the guys seemed to have forgotten about the thrashy riffage, which comes up on the shorter, more satisfying numbers: "Black and Yellow", the great galloping power/thrasher "Lines of Horror", and especially the smashing stormy killer "Luci's Dance". Later on another, even more elaborate song comes: the 11-min long "Daemynspeke"; this is multi-layered stuff, which this time features some really intriguing guitars, as well as some more aggressive riffs; it could have been made shorter, though; some moments sound a bit strained and uninspired. "Don't Cheer Me Up" is another cool intense mid-paced track, which nicely speeds up near the end. "Nuclear Requiem" is a bit unnecessary, being a melodic pointless instrumental. It needed just a little refinement for the band to find the perfect winning formula to thrash with the best, but they folded soon after this one.

Aftermath - Straight From Hell [ep]

"Straight From Hell" is quite a cool beginning, despite some minor flaws. It contains one nice up-tempo power/thrasher "Mask of Deception", one slower, and not as interesting heavy/power metal hymn "Pandemonium", one very cool speed/thrasher "Straight From Hell", which must have been an influence on the Agent Steel's "Rager" from "Unstoppable Force", and one energetic speed metal killer "You're Never Gonna wake Up".

ENOLA GAY, the name of the fateful plane that dropped the first atomic bomb in the history of mankind, is also the name of one explosive metal band. Enola Gay formed in 1987 although it took 8 years before the bands was offered a record deal and released their debut album. The band has toured with such bands as Iced Earth, Nevermore, Stratovarius and Grave Digger.
Yet another killer German power metal band. Man, there are so many good bands in Europe that are just not seeing enough publicity and distribution in the States. "Pressure" is the band's second release. The style rides a fine line between prog-metal and power metal. The music is heavy and aggressive, yet retains a sense of melody. The singers voice reminds me of another singer, but the name slip my mind upon writing this. The guitar solos on this disc simply shred. Upon closer examination of the liner notes, I discover that Uwe Lulis (Grave Digger) played much of the leads on this disc. The band do smoking rendition of the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby", which has also been recorded by American thrash band Realm.

The genre of symphonic metal is creating a nice family tree of it's own; every branch is growing into a lot of different subgenres. The French outfit Auspex hangs somewhere between the rock opera's and symphonic gothic metal branches.

From the first moment on it's clear that Auspex is a top band of a high quality. The proof? The excellently mixed vocal lines in 'Subjective Archtecture'; the intro of 'Resolutio'. That's one reason why I cannot control my curiosity in listening to the rest of the album. I'm definitely not disappointed; we can call this complex music of Auspex amazing and for sure no copy of any band in his kind. The repertoire contains melodic and sublime guitar work, spacey sounds like in 'Rise' and beautiful classic arrangements carry you away to a time in which Bach or Mozart might live once more. The electronic beats in 'Theater of Pain' are fresh and daring and with that Auspex shows how good they are.

Singer Elodie has some great vocal qualities; she takes you into a world of devotion and vocals with a lot of passion. Something that takes care of some pleasant, touching surprises. Sometimes it sounds like she's hovering on the compositions of her band mates, because I can hear in her voice that she likes what she is doing in Auspex.

This band (established in 2001) is for sure ready to cross the French borders, because they released a very fine debut record. After fifty-four minutes I'm pleasantly surprised; Auspex is the ultimate meeting of all corners from the global metal scene present today; they know how the avoid being a copycat!
