Formed in 1994 as Iron Angel the band spent a lot of time of their first years in developing and refining their classical metal. After a alteration of name the band released a demo in 1998 which led to many positive response worldwide. With more than 3.000 sold samples the record companies were queuing up to sing Jacob's Dream. Metal Blade was he lucky one. In 2000 'Jacob's Dream' and in 2001 'Theater Of War' were released and again the reactions were overwhelming. Determing for the specific sound was vocalist David Taylor, who with his typical voice gave the songs a sound of their own. But he is no longer part of Jacob's Dream and this leaves us with the question if the band will be able to preserve the high quality from their previous releases.

Replenished with new vocalist Chaz Bond Jacob's Dream releases a new cd, four year after their preceding one. When you know the other cd's of the band, you probably need some time to get used to the new singer. Chaz Bond sounds a bit heavier and deeper and in a song as 'Tempest' he even let us hear something that should be a grunt. There is not much change to the way the melodies have been written and therefore this cd is packed with alternate metal songs in the style of NWoBHM and bands as Fates Warning and the early Queensryche, without sounding somewhat out-of-date or unfashionable. In comparison with 'Theater of Dreams' the songs are a bit more massive, which is certainly something to which the disappointing production has its' part, occasionally more complex and sedate passages have been inserted ('Keeper Of The Crown' for example). Most striking songs are 'Tempest', the to some extent melancholic Drowning Man', 'Deceiver Of The Nations' and 'At The Gates'. Most of them are on the second part of the cd: a coincidence? On the promo disk there is a bonus track, without a title, which obviously appears after a minute of exasperating silence. This track is instrumental, sounds a lot fresher and … is on of the highlights of this cd.

Just as on 'Jacob's Dream' and 'Theater Of War' Jacob's Dream brings us a cd filled with nice classical guitar riffs en the necessary double bass. When you are looking for originality, you will not find it here. But what is wrong with a bunch of genuine metal songs?

The masters of folk induced power metal are galloping their way into our homes with their latest effort, Among Beggars and Thieves! After doing some soul searching on their last album, Northwind, Falconer was able to find the sound that made them who they are and put out a great album. Their sixth album ventures down the same path and takes the listener on another exciting journey.

While a lot of critics and fans alike felt that Grime vs. Grandeur took an unpopular road down a harder edged, more serious path with little of the folk inspired charm of prior releases, the album didn’t prove to be a waste. Instead, the band was able to take what they learned from that album and inject it directly into their favored sound. So we now have a little heavier and a little more serious Falconer. Yes, there is still cheese in the lyrics, but they aren’t nearly as corny as they once were when they began. The recent inclusions of songs in their native tongue were also nice additions.

This maturation of the band has carried over from the last album in their playing as well. No longer does the band frequently overwhelm the listener with straight forward speed metal tracks that go nowhere and felt generic at times as they did in their earlier days. The song structures found here are well crafted and give each track their own identity.

Even when compared to their last release, I found the songs on here to have better diversity amongst one another. Everything ranging from soft to mid-tempo cuts or wavering between mid and fast tempos will be found here. To show they still got it, opening tune “Field of Sorrow” and the later “Pale Light of Silver Moon” provides a generous throwback to those tracks which scorch at blazing speeds. They even save the bombastic theatrics for what is perhaps the best closer in the Falconer catalogue, “Dreams and Pyres.”

Final Verdict
Although I still feel there is room for growth and improvement, I found this to be my favorite Falconer release to date. The tracks ooze with soaring harmonies and catchy riffs making each one memorable on Among Beggars and Thieves. The forthcoming single, “Carnival of Disgust” has one of the most infectious melodies I have ever heard from the band. This is definitely one power metal album swelling with folk rhythms that you need to hear!

A cool female fronted, slightly progressive, power/thrash metal band. At times the music loses its edge and descends into classic heavy metal territory, but there are enough hard-hitting riffs to keep the thrash metal fan satisfied. The music alternates between more simplistic tracks, and more complex, technical ones. The singer has a cool, mid-ranged tember, coming as a mix between Doro Pesch and Leather Leone. The problem is that the tempo is too one-dimensional: mid to slow, with a few timid attempts at more energy ("The Election", which is actually the only full-blooded thrasher).

The band sees their own music as an amalgamation of the classic 80's heavy metal, a more epic 90's ambience and a dark progressive sound, more of this time. And I agree completely with them! The music they present us with is a fine mid-tempo journey through a beautiful musical landscape. It is very difficult to place this band in a corner when comparing them with other bands. And that is one of the fine qualities of this band; it means that they are pretty unique. When you put a gun to my head and force me to make a comparison then I will have to say that the music is a mix between Threshold and Psychotic Waltz.

In Torben Askholm the band found the perfect voice to make the music even darker and more complete than it already was. Torben is the former singer of Prophets Of Doom and the progressive metal outfit Northern Empire. If you are ready to undergo a new musical experience, I can only advise you to check out this album and enjoy this exciting adventure that is called 'Purification'

Have you ever been in a situation where you just bought your brand new ultra expensive pair of Nike shoes and then check the tag to see the proud statement "made in Taiwan"? Can they really make American shoes in Taiwan? Hell yeah they can! It's not the place you build something that matters but whether you possess the know-how. Funny introduction? Think twice cos Final Answer is a bunch of Greeks playing US power metal! Only a few bands try to reproduce that sound of the ‘87-‘93 golden era and they're all American. So the real question lies with whether they possess the know-how to play one of the most demanding metal genres out there. The answer is yes! This is as American as it can be in mentality and craftsmanship and it's quite a delight since the Americans find lots of trouble reproducing Jag Panzer, early Queensryche, Titan Force, Crimson Glory or Hittman material these days! If you find these names somewhat intriguing then I think it's pretty safe to say that Final Answer have done a great job sounding like something they're not! 100% American like all the aforementioned!

Now pay attention to the riffage in "Latent Revival" for example. I don't think you get the chance to listen to that kind of stuff from new bands anymore. Lyrical, fairly technical, high pitch vibrato vocal, flashy soloed, shear powered, you name it, it's all here. These guys start off with the right ingredients if you ask me! But how about putting it down to amazing songwriting? Before taking the next step there's one or two things that can be said about this issue. Final Answer have done a pretty good job in songwriting but not in all cases. I found myself really enjoying some songs in this album (Vigilant Eye, Latent Revival, Voyager In Red, An Unplugged Dream) but also feeling indifferent during several others (The Ultimate Challenge, Gray Matter, Gate To Insanity). It's not that they're bad songs or mediocre anyhow but it feels like they don't get where they should. So I'd say that this is an album of serious emotional undulations. Nostalgia and awkwardness are maybe the best words to describe it but I must scratch disappointment off the book for this one to avoid misunderstandings. It's just the realization that no matter how good you are in reproducing a sound, the original has always a different feel to it. Strong points for "Visual Maze" are the guitar work, how amazingly close to the US power metal grandeur these guys sometimes get and the vocals. Weak points have to be the drums production, the "European trying too hard to sound American" thingy and the vocals again (sometimes they lack imagination).

This album also has a couple of really striking appearances in it! Mike Soliz (Militia, Watchtower, Oblivion Knight, Assalant) sings in Gray Matter but sounds out of shape and Harry ConKlin (who's that guy?) grants his godly voice to a Titan Force cover at the end of the album and proves he's one of the top vocalists ever, beyond musical genres! The same cover is also sung by the regular vocalist of the band and it's ok but I always object to bands covering songs of the same sub-genre. Accurate performance but nothing really came out of listening to it. Anyway I rest my case, the choice is yours!

The story of Metal Jan is quite representative for a ton of czech bands that were active from the mid 80's (1986) but never really got any success eventhough their Metal was highly interesting and known by a wider audience it would have been much easier to get a deal or at least alot more recognition that they truly did deserve.

This CD contains their Demo from 1992 in re-recorded form plus one bonus track and due to the fact that they were into classic Power/Speed Metal with an melodic touch similar to bands such as Riot ("Thundersteel"), Helloween ("Keeper of the 7 keys") or Pokolgep ("Pokoli Szinjatek") and in my opinion even are topping "Thundersteel" that just survived by 3 extraordinary Speed Metal trax while in case of Metal Jan 75% of the album delivers full speed ahead, a guitar riff-o-rama and doublebassdrum lead upper class Power Metal on an instrumental level that other bands of that genre can just dream about!

In my eyes the hottest unsigned band from Czech Rep. honestly eventhough the band has split up definitely now and the last remaining copies of this CD are now sold off. I'm glad that I got one of the last copies to make them more known and everything I can advice to you is that if you're into classic Power/Speed Metal bands like the ones mentioned above then you have to try this undiscovered jewel of steel! If not then I can't help you anymore..

If you ask my opinion then I would tell you that this record is one of the most brilliant u.s. power metal records ever released. If you ask me why I believe this, I would tell you to leave the questions and simply listen to this album. In the vein of old Queensryche this album is full great riffs, brilliant melodies and unbelievable vocals. It opens with the same titled track ?Deliver This Dream?, the ideal opening track for the record and probably the best. From the very first second you will notice the characteristic guitar playing, the great riffing and the ?even more- characteristic voice lines. Once you hear the great singer of this band it is impossible to forget his voice. Back to the song I must say that it is powerful, full of melody and strong riffing. What it follows is the track ?The Vision? in which we can realize for one more time that great the singer is. Then it is time for ?Make it someway?, a great ballad and one of my favorites in general (I know that many of you would disagree but I simply do not care). ?Hold your Faith? that follows starts with a great riff and it is in fast tempo, killer song that is followed by ?King of Fools? another very characteristic song with great melodic lines both in guitars and vocals. The next one is the song ?teaser? ?and its great main riff- and yes the song really rocks! ?Beware the Knight? is the title of the next track and this is a great advice for all those mother fuckers that have to say a word about HEAVY METAL and finally the record closes with the ?Last Ride of Ichabod Crane? which is the darkest composition of the record (due to this great acoustic bridge in the middle of the song). Well if you search for great melodic heavy / power metal with really something special as far the music, then this is the record for you. Everything in this record got its own personality, the riffing, the melodies (epic with a dark touch from time to time), the great unique vocals, the structure of the songs, everything. Xcel was not another typical band that simply tried to copy well known standers. They played HEAVY METAL in their own way and the have been noticed as one of the most recognizable bands of the 80s U.S scene. All hail Xcel!

The strong 80's Japanese thrash metal scene experienced a strong recession in the next decade, with many of its representatives having mutated into various modern styles, with just occasional hints of thrash. This album is a cool mix of thrash, speed, power and heavy metal, with a nod to the Bay Area heroes in the more thrashy sections. The problem is that, like it happens with many other Japanese bands, the music ventures into more melodic territories quite often ("Pig Blood Blues", "Lifemaker", to name a few), losing considerably its edge. However, the presence of some good headbangers like "Moon Hawk Project" reminds of the former glories of Japanese thrash.
