What do we have here? LEGEND MAKER? Great Fantasy-cover! Wow! A fat and equally great booklet! Oh, what stands there? Cali, Colombia? Wow, wouldn't have thought that! OK, so let's listen into it...
Holla! So Colombia also has learned its HELLOWEEN-lesson well, but... Hey, stop, where are you going? You stay here, I did in no way say that they are yet another clone, no... Sure you can count LEGEND MAKER among Power Metal and despite their origins among the European branch and also singer Michael Grant (originally with ONWARD) sounds surprisingly European for an American, yet still different somehow.
Well, and contrary to most comparable bands, which still are flooding the scene, LEGEND MAKER can convince in every department, variable and nicely cliché-free song-writing, great melodies, gripping arrangements, excellent solos and strong vocals, yes, Power Metal still can be real fun!v Opening "Leonelda" showcases a barrage of good ideas, fast, with interesting melody-lines, which differ from the standard, also the guitar-melodies and thy rhythms are positively different, a great solo as topping, this song is good, this song is fun! After the more riffy "Sands Of Time" (which cannot fully reach the strong opener) and the relatively similar "To Hell Or To Heaven" the four Colombians (and one US-American) set all guns blazing with the almost twelve-minute "Story", from piano-underlaid to double-bass-driven you'll get everything in between, always dynamic, always flowing, a little masterpiece in itself! And also the two remaining songs "Moon Seasons" and "Last Chapter" are absolutely up-to-par!
All in all a really convincing performance of the five guys, everything fits here, melodies, song-writing, vocals, production, packaging, who likes Power Metal and would like to hear something besides the STRATOGAMMAWEENPSODY-epigones, LEGEND MAKER are something for you for sure!

This band were formed by Marcel Schmier after his exit from the thrash legends Destruction. The first effort carries the trade mark razor sharp Destruction-like riffs, and is quite a good beginning; it thrashes with full force and conviction on most of the tracks (check out the speed killer "Parody of Life", the awesome riff-fest "Kick Over Your Traces", the jumpy intense "Curse"- a marvellous song!, or the other speed metal delight "Crack Brained"- a nod to the Destruction album of the same name?; well, if so, quite a good nod!), raising the hopes high of those, who were not too happy with the more technical direction Destruction took with "Cracked Brain", and a sure pick for the top ten of 1990.

"A Bizarre Gardening Accident" is more than a worthy follow-up, although the unbridled aggression of the debut can seldom be heard. "Signs Of Insanity" sounds like a leftover from the previous album, with its cool up-tempo thrashing approach, and the next "Hit Machine" is no less intense, but the guitars are not as sharp, with a certain technical edge. After the peaceful, heavy metal break "Born in the Woods", the thrashing goes on with "Two-Faced Promises", followed by the humorous joke rock'n roll piece "Ramalama". This might pull you back a bit, but "Boozer" will bring you back in the game, with its galloping, sharp riffage. "Pangs of Remorse" is a cool, heavy ballad, followed by a couple of more laid-back power/thrash mixtures, before the closer "Deadly Instinct" speeds up again, being a fine energetic thrasher.

"Rebirth" starts in a heavy, semi-modern manner, with the stomping "Adrenalin"; the modern sound remains, but it is more appealing on the faster tracks ("Army of the Blind", "Scars"). "Don´t Bogart..." is another joke-song, but it has no many aggressive tracks to contrast on, and is hardly necessary; the same goes for the semi-balladic "Too Late For A Change". "Struck" and "Warhead" offer something new: heavy, slower songs, with stomping, but technical, choppy riffs, which sounded quite classic and interesting

Now is that true? The Gerstetten-witches have a new album? And what do we get? Nu-Metal or worst poser-stuff? No, not in the least, it's what the name of STORMWITCH had been standing for ever since. They have their Gothic/Romantic-lyrics in their pack again, at least that is the impression that I get, when I look at the song-titles.
Also musically they take a step back in time. While I regard the opener as totally wrongly picked, because it leads you onto the wrong trail, but the second song, the title-track "Dance With The Witches", is almost typical and damn catchy! Next up is "Jeanne D'Arc", a typical song for STORMWITCH, which has this certain magic. They put a lot of emphasis in variety. If speedy ("Knights Of Light"), rather folky ("The Devil's Bride") or really nicely kitschy ("The House Of Usher"), they have not lost a step. Even though a few thongs are rather mediocre ("Proud And Honest"). My personal favourite is the epic "The Altar Of Love", which almost reaches classics like "Russia's On Fire" or "Jonathan's Diary".
All in all a quite good comeback-album, if no highflyer. But nobody would have expected that, would you? Welcome back, guys! Looking forward to gigs!

Silverdust Records presents a true jewel. In time for the STORMWITCH reunion, they release a kind of Best-Of including the real band classics. Okay, there had been such a compilation in 1998, released by B.O. Records but, unfortunately, the label doesn't exist anymore.
I think, I needn't tell something about the music of STORMWITCH. They more less had been the absolutely best that German Melodic Metal underground has had on offer. Today, the Oldies of them are still great. There had been no German band with such an inventiveness, diversity and burning passion!
Timeless evergreens like "Masque Of The Red Death" or "Jonathan's Diary", only to name two, are gigantic songs, which give me fat goose bumps and this still after 15 years. As there is released officially just one classically record on CD, "The Beauty And The Beast" (1987), this records gets really important. I don't count "War Of The Wizards" or "Shogun" to the STORMWITCH classics and "Eye Of The Storm" was just moderate. No, I speak of "Walpurgis Night" (1984), "Tales Of Terror" (1985) and "Stronger Than Heaven" (1986).
This sampler includes a good overview about the first three records of STORMWITCH from Gerstetten. There had been nearly all records as cheap Laserlight-CDs, except for "Tales Of Terror". So, one gets the six best songs of that record, which had one of the most dilletantish cover-artworks ever. By the way, all cover-artworks are pictured in the fat booklet and they all look like shit...The music is important and that one is great here!
Their Black Romantic Metal was something special at that time and it's still today. Their lyrics had been about black magic, DARK literature and historical events and they had been something completely different as the cliché lyrics of the other bands of the bands' genre. By the way, the band had been the first ones, who wear costumes on stage and so they had been the outriders of all RUNNING WILDs and RHAPSODYs of this world.
A must for all friends of traditional Metal or True Metal freaks!

Many of you might know the name of STORMWITCH only from the "Ravenlord"-cover-version of Sweden's HAMMERFALL. Which is a pity, because the band from the south of Germany had released five more or less outstanding albums between 1984 and 1989, of which the first four still are counted among the crème de la crème of German Metal.
My personal favourite is the "Beauty And The Beast"-album, which is the band's fourth. A little more commercial than the three previous efforts, the album features all facets of good Melodic Metal. No matter which track you take, all anthems! "Call Of The Wicked" opens up quite energetic and impresses with its immortal melody and the simple, but effective chorus! The famous title-track, where singer Andy Mück is accompanied by a lady in the chorus, is a cultural asset in my circles already! They used female vocals long before PARADISE LST! Their soft spot for black literature and historical events brought them the title of "Masters Of Black Romantic".
"Just For One Night" is based on a fairy-tale "of one, who set out to learn fear"! "Emerald Eye" deals with a legendary gemstone, while "Tigers Of The Sea" is a story about the English buccaneers, which raided Spanish ships in the name of their queen. Centre-piece and also the calmest song of the STORMWITCHes clearly is the gigantic "Tears By The Firelight", a wonderful ballad with campfire-atmosphere, where singer Andy again is accompanied by the above-mentioned lady. The song deals with a man, who comes home from battle and is longingly expected by his wife. Deeply moving! The song also works without any heavy elements and has a slightly medieval flair!
The epic track "Russia's On Fire" is very slow-paced and enriched with Russian folklore, which is made very clear with the great middle-part with balalaika and the Cossack-choir! On "Cheyenne" the spirits of the Indians are evoked. A quite fast song with a formidable chorus and a great structure. To close things off we are bid welcome in the most famous lunatic asylum, "Welcome To Bedlam" is the title, riff-wise reminiscent of ACCEPT. But STORMWITCH would not be STORMWITCH, if they had not empressed their own touch. With shrill cries this song is perfect for all high-voice-grumblers :)
Unfortunately the apparition is over after almost 37 minutes already, but who cares, I still have the three previous albums, which are not to be sneezed at, but are very hard to get by now. This album has been re-released only a short while ago, but I do not know on which label. But still I think that almost every second-hand-shop should have at least one copy of the cheap (and gruesome looking) Laserlight-edition. In most cases you'll even be able to get the first edition with the original-cover.

"Tales..." is the second album of German cult legends Stormwitch. The nwobhm feel of their debut "Walpurgis Night", starts to give way to a more power metal aproach, while maintaining the bands' trademark mystyfying atmosphere and occult lyrics. The compositions are overall speedier and more forceful, with "Point of no return" and "Sword of Sagon" ranking among my band favorite's.
If you like classic riff driven German metal, coupled with early maiden-esque references, then this is about as good as it gets. A genuine classic.

You can say what you want, but the old STORMWITCH records can easily compete with the classics of ACCEPT for example.
Heavy as hell, well-performed, melodic and catchy, ennobled with amazing choruses and as various as IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST on the peak of their career! STORMWITCH don’t have to hide behind the great ones, though only a few recognized that. One of the first songs, I heard from STORMWITCH, was “Cave Of Steenfall” (on HR3’s “Hard’n’Heavy”) and after that, I was a big fan of this band.
Don’t matter which song you take, there’s no filler, not one single weak note. Every true Metal fan must have “Walpurgis Night”!!!
